Here at Winescape we are constantly on the lookout for new and exciting
wines to bring to the attention of our customers and now we are
introducing a few exceptional new bottles from Corsica for you to try.
Following the advent of France's vin de Pays system in Corsica, one third
of it's vineyards were uprooted and put to better use. This, combined with
increased European Union subsidies in the 1980's, led to a general
restructuring of Corsica's wine industry with a determined emphasis on
raising the quality of the island's wines. Corsica is sunnier than
anywhere in mainland France and there is very little rainfall between
August and September. Due to the mountainous nature of Corsica, a jigsaw
of mesoclimates exists, the effect of altitude, latitude, maritime
influence and the winds vary considerably between vineyards. Whilst grape
varieties seen in mainland France such as Cinsault, Carignan and Grenache
account for about a quarter of vines in Corsica it is the indigenous
varieties such as Vermentinto, Sciacarellu and Niellucciu that have been
increasing their share of the island's vineyard in recent years; and it is
these varieties that are dominant in the wines below.
The best Vermentinto is grown in the north of the island and produces pale
coloured wines, crisp and zesty with ripe citrus flavours. Sciacarellu,
which is unique to Corsica, is a variety capable of making deep flavoured,
but not necessarily deep coloured, peppery, spicy reds and rosé's that are
reasonably high in alcohol. Niellucciu is used to make heavier style reds
and rosé's; the reds are intensely coloured with good structured tannins
and balanced acidity.
